Rehabilitation
There is a world of difference between helping and teaching. The University of Illinois Medical Center's physical and occupational therapists are committed to teaching each patient how they can regain strength, ability and function. Whether a patient's therapy goal is to walk again, cook a family meal or return to work and other daily activities, UIMC therapists have the skills, experience and specialized knowledge to address each patient's individual needs. The goal for every patient is to achieve the highest possible level of physical, emotional, mental and social independence.
Our Services
Neurology and Rehabilitation Clinic
At the Neurology and Rehabilitation Clinic, we link knowledgeable, compassionate doctors with the latest technologies to provide a comprehensive scope of neurological services. We treat disorders of the nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles as well as provide specialized testing.
Inpatient Rehabilitation
Our leadership, physicians, nurses, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, social workers, discharge planners, physical therapists and staff have the specialized training to manage multiple levels and types of rehabilitation.
We see patients with conditions ranging from stroke to knee replacement. We also rehabilitate medical patients who have lost essential functional skills due to long hospitalizations for heart disease, organ transplant, or cancer therapy. We provide high-quality medical rehabilitation for patients recovering from neurological, medical and orthopedic illnesses
As part of our process each inpatient receives a minimum of 3 hours of therapy daily divided between the morning and afternoon sessions. The mix of physical, occupational and speech therapy depends on the individual needs of the patient. Patients may also participate in music therapy, spiritual programs or other group activities depending on their interest and status. Each patient is supported by both a social worker and a discharge planner. Health Psychology sees patients when emotional issues arise. All patients are staffed weekly at the Rehabilitation Team Conference where goals, progress, and discharge plans are discussed. Family conferences are scheduled when discharge issues arise that require consultation with family members and patients.
Discharge planning is coordinated by the entire rehabilitation team. Our full-time discharge planner and full-time social worker lead discharge planning that involves families, patients, therapists, physicians and nurses in making the best possible discharge dispositions. Our goal is to return as many patients to the community as possible
Physical Therapy
From prosthetic training to pediatric developmental evaluation, we offer one of the broadest ranges of therapy services in the country. Our services include but are not limited to:
• Therapy patients in the community or anyone with special needs can access our gym in the evening. Equipment includes an accessible universal workout station.
• Our therapeutic pool, one of only a handful in Chicago, features accessible entry, an underwater treadmill and resistance jets. With the pool, patients recovering from surgery begin their rehabilitation sooner. Parents of young patients learn how to lead their children in water exercises.
• Our occupational therapy resources include an accessible bathroom and kitchen to help you become more independent in daily living skills.
Our Team
Our therapists practice teamwork every day. We collaborate with orthopedic surgeons, neurologists, pediatricians, cardiologists, nurses, speech-language pathologists, social workers, psychologists and dietitians to maximize quality of care for our patients.
