Pulmonary and Critical Care

The Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care provides a full array of services for patients. Our superbly trained medical teams are equipped with state-of-the-art technology to provide accurate diagnoses, effective treatments and cures, and patients receive the highest level of care and attention medicine can provide.

UIMC supports a busy pulmonary inpatient consultation services and a robust outpatient practice in pulmonary medicine. Patients with a variety of respiratory and illnesses come to UIMC for an expert opinion and care in a variety of both common and unusual illnesses. As part of our research efforts we also conduct several clinical studies in which patients can be involved.

At UIMC we are passionate about respiratory issues and we strive to foster an environment of learning and research, partnered with an exceptional, compassionate approach toward our patients.


Our Services

Pulmonary Care
We staff a comprehensive pulmonary care outpatient clinic for the evaluation and treatment of patients with asthma and respiratory diseases. We also support a busy pulmonary inpatient consultation service.

Critical Care
Our Medical Intensive Care Unit cares for seriously ill patients with sepsis, multi-organ failure, such as respiratory, cardiac, renal or liver, and GI bleeding. We also care for patients with bone marrow, liver and renal transplants, as well as AIDS, and end stage pulmonary and liver diseases. State of the art monitoring systems and ventilators, an experienced and dedicated nursing staff, and a large team of medical professionals - intensivists, pharmacists, and infectious disease specialists - assure the provision of exceptional care to our most critically ill patients.


Our Team

The Pulmonary department is staffed by over 30 professionals dedicated to staying up-to-date on the latest research and treatment options available to provide our patients with the highest quality care. Many of our physicians have decades of experience treating patients and are actively involved in extensive research.  Our fellowship program recently expanded to include 12 fellows, who are also an integral part of all of the department's many operations.

Our areas of expertise include: asthma, bronchiectasis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), critical care medicine, interstitial lung disease, scleroderma, tuberculosis and rare lung diseases.
