Our Services
Child Psychiatry
A multi-disciplinary treatment team of child psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers provides psychiatric assessments; medication management; case management; psychoeducation; group, individual, and family therapy; parent guidance; treatment and consultation for children experiencing symptoms of a psychiatric disorder.
There are five subspecialty clinics. The Pediatric Mood Disorders Clinic offers cutting-edge treatment for children with bipolar disorder and depression, and conducts research to improve the diagnosis, treatment and outcome for children with mood disorders. Pharmacological treatment is algorithm-driven based on empirically derived treatment strategies. Psychosocial treatment is based on Child and Family-Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy, a family-based intervention developed at the clinic that integrates cognitive-behavioral therapy with psychoeducation and interpersonal psychotherapeutic techniques to address the unique symptoms and psychosocial needs of children with mood disorders, and their families.
Pediatric Stress and Anxiety Disorders Clinic
The Pediatric Stress and Anxiety Disorders Clinic provides a multi-disciplinary evaluation, comprehensive and evidence-based treatment, and a wide range of outpatient services for children and adolescents with anxiety disorders. The clinic team works collaboratively with the patient, family and school to develop novel interventions for childhood anxiety. The clinic also emphasizes teaching and training in early identification and treatment. Clinical research focuses on risk and protective factors in youth with anxiety disorders and the impact of community violence on youth and families experiencing trauma and coexisting disorders.
Disruptive Behavior Disorders (school-age) Clinic
The Disruptive Behavior Disorders (school-age) Clinic addresses behavioral and co-morbid emotional problems in youngsters with Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Conduct Disorder, ages 7 to 16. Using an ecological evidence-based paradigm, the clinic implements protocols for psychiatric and substance abuse evaluations, family therapy, parenting skills training, case management and links to community resources for building social skills. The clinic works with parents to obtain school-based consultation addressing classroom behaviors, academic functioning, and to improve parental involvement. Medication evaluation and treatment is provided, often maximizing youngsters' response to family psychotherapy.
Hyperactivity, Attention and Learning Problems (HALP) Clinic
The Hyperactivity, Attention and Learning Problems (HALP) Clinic provides a comprehensive multidisciplinary evaluation for children, youth and young adults who have school problems, most often due to learning disabilities and ADHD. In addition to psychiatric assessment, the individual receives achievement- and intelligence-testing. The clinic provides recommendations to the family, school, or consulting physician for ongoing care. Other services include parenting skills training, social skills groups, ongoing medication consultation, and treatment.
Autism Clinic
The Autism Clinic provides a comprehensive multi-disciplinary assessment including a structured diagnostic interview, neuropsychological and psychoeducational assessment, and a neurological examination. Additional assessments may include genetic and metabolic screening and functional brain imaging. The program provides school consultation and case management services and a full range of services for affected youth and their families. Clinical research focuses on genetic and neurofunctional factors in autism.
The Autism Program is a statewide systems development initiative and a network of resources designed to create and enhance community networks that promote best practice in the diagnosis, treatment, and education of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. At UIC's Institute for Juvenile Research, services include diagnostic evaluations, ongoing consultation and training to treatment and school teams, parent training, and social skills groups.
Developmental Disorders Clinic
The Developmental Disorders Clinic is a lifespan clinic offering diagnostic evaluations for individuals with suspected Autism Spectrum Disorders. This clinic also provides parent training, behavioral intervention, individual treatment, social skills groups, and school consultation for students with an autism spectrum disorder.
