Neuro Sciences Center

The University of Illinois Medical Center's Department of Neurosurgery treats an extraordinary variety of conditions affecting the braine, spine, nerves and arteries of the neck. In many cases, our surgeons have successfully treated patients who had not found help elsewhere.

Our Services

Stroke
Our neurosurgeons have pioneered new therapies for the prevention and treatment of stroke. A multidisciplinary approach is used to evaluate and treat patients at risk for stroke. We treat patients with common diseases, such as hardening and blockage of the brain arteries, as well as less common diseases, such as Moya-Moya using endovascular and microsurgical approaches, and aided by unique neuro-imaging programs designed by Medical Center neurosurgeons. Our patients receive the latest and most-advanced care for the prevention and management of neuro conditions

Intracranial Aneurysms
Our surgeons have treated more than 3,000 aneurysms with one of the highest success rates in the world. Specialized techniques for treating complex aneurysms, including bypass surgery, are available. In addition to open brain surgery, our endovascular neuroradiologists can thread a catheter through blood vessels to treat the brain aneurysm internally. Our work in this area is internationally recognized.

Brain Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM)
AVMs are tangles or knots of arteries and veins. They serve no purpose and can rupture, causing dangerous bleeding in the brain. Our neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists and radiosurgeons can provide several advanced treatment options. We are one of a few centers nationwide able to perform nidus embolization, a technique with a higher success rate than the traditional procedures.

Spine and Spinal Cord Disorders
Our neurosurgeons have extensive experience in treating spine and spinal cord disorders and are internationally recognized in this field. We specialize in the management of complex and problem cases. Minimally invasive and other innovative approaches are offered to patients based on their individual needs.

Neuro-Oncology
Our neuroscientists have combined with specialists in medical, surgical and radiation oncology, psychiatry and neurology to provide a multidisciplinary neuro-oncology clinic for those patients with cancer of the central nervous system. Patients receive the most-advanced therapies available guided by this multidisciplinary team. State-of-the-art computer-guided surgery allows precise tumor removal without complications and with hospital stays of only a few days.

Pain
Our neurosurgeons provide an entire spectrum of neurosurgical procedures for the treatment of chronic pain including sophisticated neuromodulation techniques and individually tailored interventions. The comprehensive approach and unique surgical procedures provide hope to many patients with pain syndromes that are resistant to therapy. Our particular expertise is in treatment of chronic trigeminal pain, pain due to cancer and stroke, and complex pain syndromes.

Movement, Functional Disorders and Epilepsy
Parkinson's disease, movement disorders, pain syndromes and spasticity are among the disorders treated by our neurosurgeons using advanced computer-guided surgical technology. Using specially developed equipment, patients with epilepsy who are resistant to treatment are evaluated for surgical therapies in cooperation with UIMC neurologists. One of the first centers in the midwest to treat Parkinson's disease and essential tremor with deep brain stimulation, we now have approval to use this modality for treatment of severe dystonia and, most recently, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).

Peripheral Nerve Disorders
In cooperation with other specialties, our neurosurgeons participate in a specialized clinic to diagnose and treat disorders of the peripheral nerves. From peripheral neuropathies requiring medical management to trauma that requires surgical correction, our neuroscientists provide comprehensive diagnosis and management of these disorders. We also have a unique expertise in treatment of peripheral nerve tumors.

Pediatric Neurosurgery
Because of our expertise in critical care, we are a center for the referral of complex pediatric neurosurgical problem cases - specifically brain AVMs and vein of Galen aneurysms. We have more experience in the treatment of craniofacial disorders than any other medical center in the world.
