Stem Cell Facilities

The Stem Cell/Bone Marrow Transplant Program currently performs transplants at the University of Illinois Medical Center, in a 10-bed unit equipped with special air filtration systems designed to lower the risk of life threatening infections.

This unit is staffed by a team of highly skilled nurses and utilizes the expertise of consultants from infectious disease, pulmonary, pharmacy, nutrition, and psychosocial support services. In addition, the program maintains a state-of-the-art clinical stem cell laboratory, supported by an experienced staff that allows the program to perform innovative clinical trials addressing the effects of manipulating the stem cell graft.

Importantly, a new laboratory for transplant immunology has recently been established. Active research is ongoing in the areas of immunogenic stem cells, the combination of purified stem cells and new drugs, and the use of other marrow cells such as dendritic and mesenchymal cells.
