Small Bowel Transplant

Small  Bowel Transplant

The University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago has an outstanding small bowel transplant program.  We possess the world's leading experience with living-related small bowel transplantation in a single institution.

CONDITIONS for Small Bowel Transplant

Small bowel transplantation may be an option in carefully selected patients living with intestinal failure due to any of the following diseases:

  • Short-gut syndrome caused by volvulus, gastroschisis, trauma, necrotizing enterocolitis, ischemia, and Crohn's disease.
  • Poor absorption caused by microvillus inclusion, secretory diarrhea, and autoimmune enteritis.
  • Poor motility caused by pseudo-obstruction, aganglionosis (Hirschsprung disease), visceral neuropathy.
  • Tumor or cancer such as desmoid tumor, familial polyposis (Gardner's disease).
Over the last 10 years, our team has performed 24 cases: nine adult and 15 pediatric living-related donor small bowel transplants with three patients being transplanted twice. We continue to expand our small bowel transplant program with this lifesaving procedure.
