Medication Assistance Program (MAP)

The Medication Assistance Program (MAP) attempts to find long-term solutions for patients who have limited incomes or financial resources and who take chronic medications.

What type of medication assistance is provided?

  • Referral to and assistance with application for state-funded assistance programs (Medicaid, Circuit Breaker Pharmaceutical Assistance, Senior Care, Kid-Care etc.)
  • Assistance with applying to pharmaceutical manufacturers’ assistance programs to obtain medication
  • Sample medications, as available
  • Deferred medication billing: As a last resort, enrolled patients are provided a short-term supply of medications for a $10 deposit per prescription. (Full payment is expected for medications costing $10 or less.) Patients will be billed for the remainder of the cost. The MAP team is prepared to work with patients to create a monthly payment plan.

How are patients referred?

Patients or providers may call to set up an appointment by calling (312) 996-7235 or (312) 996-0583 or complete the MAP Referral Form (Microsoft Word document). Intake appointments usually last 1 hour. Patients should be prepared to discuss health/prescription insurance as well as their household financial information.

The MAP patient schedule tends to be full up to two weeks in advance, so please plan ahead. We suggest that you discuss prescription insurance with inpatients during your initial patient interview so that your team can anticipate how to handle discharge prescriptions.

How are patient follow-ups conducted?

Patients are scheduled for return visits at monthly intervals, to coincide with obtaining refills. Many patients are eligible for Illinois Department of Public Aid (IDPA) spend-downs. Much effort is spent assisting patients with management of their spend-down, based on medication debt incurred by using the Deferred Medication Billing program. The goal is to empower patients to take responsible management for their medication needs.

Which patients do not qualify?

  • Patients who receive medication from Cook County Clinics, Mile Square Clinic, or other subsidized clinics or medication programs
  • Veterans eligible to receive prescriptions from the Veterans’ Assistance Clinics
  • Patients receiving Workman’s Compensation
  • Patients who are not seen by providers at the University of Illinois
  • Patients who have third-party coverage
  • Patients who are only taking lifestyle medications
