Pediatric Surgery

The Division of Pediatric Surgery carries out all types of pediatric general surgical, thoracic surgical and urologic procedures. We have particular expertise in less invasive laparoscopic and thoracoscopic surgery and also in the management of children with congenital abnormalities. We see over 1,500 patients in our clinics and carry out close to 600 surgical procedures a year. The Division is staffed by 2 Pediatric Surgeons and 2 Nurse Practitioners.

The section of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery is staffed by extremely experienced and well-known team, under the direction of Dr. Michel Ilbawi. This group has a very long and well-established track record in the surgical treatment of congenial heart disease and concentrates particularly on neonatal cardiac surgery. The clinical activities of the pediatric cardiac surgical group cover a wide range, and their total surgical load is the largest in the Midwest. They have a highly recognized expertise in innovative approaches to the treatment of complex congenital cardiac lesions.

A program of pediatric cardiac transplantation is being developed in conjunction with the adult cardiac transplantation program and will be a combined effort together with Hope Children's Hospital. The two institutions have developed an integrated, jointly-staffed program of pediatric cardiovascular services.
