Pain Medicine Clinic

Pain Medicine Clinic

The University of Illinois Medical Center is fully staffed by American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) accredited Anesthesiologists who care for patients with a variety of persistent pain states. Their combined expertise allows the clinic to offer useful prescribing advice to referring practitioners and a wide range of interventional therapies.

Our Services

  • trigger point injections
  • epidural steroid injections
  • sacroiliac joint injections with local anesthetic
  • steroid preparations
  • epidural blood patches
  • percutaneous decompressive nucleoplasties

Other procedures include:

  • transforaminal steroid injections
  • medial branch blockade and ablation
  • functional discography
  • Sympathetic ganglion blockades
  • peripheral nerve blocks which are used to aid in diagnosis and treatment

For those patients with more refractory pains, advanced invasive techniques are provided. These include the implantation of a tunneled intrathecal catheter for long-term opioid administration via an infusion pump, trial implantation of neurostimulator electrode arrays, and permanent spinal cord stimulator and pulse generator placement. The physicians also perform kyphoplasty to treat the pain from fractured vertebral bodies.

Most procedures are performed under fluoroscopic guidance to make sure the needle or catheter tip is well placed for optimal pain relief. The center uses state of the art imaging and information transfer systems.
