What is Nursing “Shared Leadership”? In its simplest form, shared leadership is shared decision-making based on the four principles of partnership, equity, accountability, and ownership at the point of service, on patient care units. It’s a decentralized management model that empowers all members of the nursing workforce to have a voice in decision-making and thus encourages diverse and creative input that helps advance the business and mission of the organization. In essence, it makes every nurse feel like he or she is “part manager” with a personal stake in the success of the organization. Those who are happy in their jobs take greater ownership of their decisions and are more invested in patient outcomes. Therefore, employees, patients, the organization, and the surrounding community benefits from shared leadership.

UIMCC and Nursing Shared Leadership
UIC nurses are embarking on developing a decentralized shared leadership model. A Shared Leadership Steering Committee, with members from both staff and nursing management, are leading this effort. This diverse group will develop the organizational structure for UIC’s shared leadership model. The committee members will represent their “constituency groups” and will need your input and communication on specific topics of discussion. Decisions that will affect the future of nursing practice at UIC is important to all of us. Please communicate with the committee members as much as possible. There will be updates to this website at least twice a month. Please use it to stay informed and communicate your opinions to committee members to help create our nursing shared leadership model at UIC.
