National Provider Identifier

NPI Get it. Share it. Use it.

Update 4/2/07 - CMS announces NPI deadline extension.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that it is initiating a contingency plan that extends the compliance date for the National Provider Identifier (NPI) from May 23, 2007 to May 23, 2008.   Read the full CMS contingency plan announcement.

What does this mean?
The NPI contingency plan permits Medicare and commercial insurers to continue accepting legacy provider identification numbers until May 23, 2008. To avoid payment disruption after the compliance date, providers should continue to obtain and share their NPI information.   Billing and other systems should be updated to accommodate both NPIs and legacy identifiers. To facilitate billing, providers should send their NPIs to all industry partners that require them.

Who needs an NPI?
All individuals and organizations who meet the definition of healthcare provider as described at 45 CFR 160.103 are eligible to obtain a National Provider Identifier or NPI. If you are a HIPAA covered provider you need an NPI.

What is an NPI?
The NPI is a 10-digit number that will be used to identify you to your healthcare partners, including all payers.  The number will be used in all HIPAA standard transactions (generally, electronic bills and prescriptions filed on your behalf). The NPI will replace the identifiers you currently use in HIPAA standard transactions that you conduct with Medicare and with other health plans. You will need an NPI prior to enrolling with Medicare.

By When do I need to have an NPI?
The NPI compliance date is May 23, 2007. CMS has announced that the compliance date has been extended to May 23, 2008. CMS recommends that you obtain your NPI prior to this date to provide you with ample time to test your NPI and share it with all of your healthcare partners, including University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago.

If You’re a University of Illinois Medical Center Physician

If your NPI is listed, please make a note of the number. You will need the NPI # to write prescriptions and to make referrals to non-UIC providers.

If your NPI is NOT listed in the table, please view our recommendations.

If You're Established Residents who started before June 1, 2007

If you’re an established resident who started before June 1, 2007, please verify whether or not you have a National Provider Identifier. If not, the Graduate Medical Education Office and the Patient Accounts Department are currently working together to establish an NPI for you. We are still in the process and will provide this information as soon as possible.  Please come back and check periodically to see if an NPI has been established for you.

If You're a New Resident who started after June 1, 2007

As a new member to the Graduate Medical Education Office, you will be given a general enrollment package.  You will need to provide your National Provider Identifier (NPI) to the office before your enrollment is considered complete.

If You’re an External Physician

If you refer patients to us, we need to know your individual (Type 1) NPI. Generally, your billing service or Practice Manager will have this information. We will use this information only for business purposes and to integrate your NPI into our systems to be compliant with this mandate. To make our systems and processes ready, please provide your information to provider@uic.edu.

Pharmacies, External Billing Entities and other Organizations

The University of Illinois Medical Center is dedicated to working together with others to provide excellent service.  To assist the transition into use of the National Provider Identifier (NPI), we have created a list of our providers’ NPIs

If the NPI you are looking for is not on our list and you are a pharmacy, please check back periodically. Our NPI listing is being updated frequently.

If you are a part of any other external entity, you need NPI information on a UIC physician and that physician is NOT in the NPI listing, please email us at provider@uic.edu.  To process your request, please include the name of the physician, your contact information and the reason for your request.  Your request should be answered within 3 business days.
