Intracranial AneurysmsOur surgeons have treated more than 3,000 aneurysms with one of the highest success rates in the world. In addition to open brain surgery, our endovascular neuroradiologists can thread a catheter through blood vessels to treat the brain aneurysm internally. Our work in this area is internationally recognized.
Brain Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM)AVMs are tangles or knots of arteries and veins. They serve no purpose and can rupture, causing dangerous bleeding in the brain. Our neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists and radiosurgeons can provide several advanced treatment options. We are one of a few centers nationwide able to perform nidus embolization, a technique with a higher success rate than the standard procedure used at other medical centers.
Spine and Spinal Cord DisordersOur neurosurgeons have 30 years of experience in treating spine and spinal cord disorders and are internationally recognized in this field. Our neurosurgeons specialize in the management of complex and problem cases.
Neuro-oncologyOur neuroscientists have combined with specialists in medical, surgical, and radiation oncology and psychiatry and neurology to provide a multidisciplinary neuro-oncology clinic for those patients with cancer of the central nervous system. PainPain is the most common symptom among patients. Neurosurgery is leading a multidisciplinary pain clinic in cooperation with anesthesia, surgical oncology, neurology orthopaedics and psychiatry. This clinic serves those patients with pain syndromes that are resistant to therapy. It is unique in the Midwest.
Movement, Functional Disorders and EpilepsyParkinson's disease, movement disorders, pain syndromes and spasticity are among the disorders treated by Medical Center neurosurgeons using advanced computer-guided surgical technology. Using specially developed equipment, patients with epilepsy resistant to treatment are evaluated for surgical therapies in cooperation with Medical Center neurologists.
Peripheral Nerve DisordersIn cooperation with orthopaedics, plastic surgery and neurology, our neurosurgeons participate in a multidisciplinary clinic, unique in the Midwest, to diagnose and treat disorders of the peripheral nerves. From peripheral neuropathies requiring medical management to trauma that requires surgical correction, Medical Center neuroscientists provide comprehensive diagnosis and management of these disorders.
Pediatric NeurosurgeryBecause of its expertise in critical care, University of Illinois Medical Center is a center for the referral of complex pediatric neurosurgical problem cases – specifically brain AVMs and vein of Galen aneurysms. We have more experience in the treatment of craniofacial disorders than any other medical center in the world. |
