The South Shore Health Center is open five days a week, with weekend and evening hours added in the summer. The state-of-the-art facilities offer a wide range of services, including family medicine, pediatrics and midwifery. The center will soon offer dental services made possible through funds provided by a grant from the Illinois Children's Healthcare Foundation. The center expects to handle 11,000 patient visits in its first year, providing needed services to the neighborhood.
The community-based health center is governed by a community board of directors, 51 percent of whom are current users of the Mile Square system. The center, a federally qualified health clinic, while caring for all, will focus in particular on the underserved -- patients who are self-pay and uninsured. A sliding fee scale will make services available to all patients regardless of their ability to pay.
