Diabetes Management Classes

The following classes are provided to help you live with and manage your diabetes. Please call (312) 996-8923, for more information or to enroll in a class.

  • Diabetes Evaluation Appointment 
    This hour visit is to welcome you and introduce you to the diabetes program.  We need to get to know you and to understand your individual learning needs.  Please bring your medication and health history list.
  • Diabetes 101 
    This hour class is an introduction to diabetes. This class discusses what diabetes is and how you will take care of yourself into the future. This is a good class for anyone who feels that they do not know much about their diabetes condition.
  • Food Fats and Salt
    This hour class focuses on dietary fats and cholesterol, lipid blood work goals, blood pressure and sodium guidelines, food sources of potassium, and ways to flavor and improve foods by using lower fat and sodium products.
  • What's to Eat
    This hour class explains how carbohydrates affect your blood sugar.  Carbohydrates, fats, and high protein foods are identified with serving sizes.  This class helps you to understand how foods and how much one consumes will affect their body.
  • Advanced Carbohydrates
    This hour class is for any person who has had the What's to Eat Class or who already understands what carbohydrates are.  This class focuses on gram counting and specific meal planning skills.  Glucose control is the main focus.
  • Food Labels and Dining Out
    This hour class covers the ins and outs of label reading for carbs, protein, and fat.  This skill will enable you to enjoy the foods you love but in an appropriate portion.  We will discuss how to eat smart, when eating out.
  • Insulin Pump Information Session
    This session is for individuals who inject insulin for their diabetes but are interested in learning about a different insulin deliver called the insulin pump.  The session provides you with a demonstration, literature and a video.
  • Dealing with Diabetes 
    This hour class provides information that will empower you to take control of the disease and assists you with day-to-day issues. If you have uncontrolled diabetes and you are tired of dealing with it, this is the class for you.
  • Meet Your Blood Glucose Meter 
    This hour class gives you an introduction to self-monitoring your blood glucose and to available blood glucose meters that will best suit your personal needs. Demonstration of the meters is given and you may also practice with your new meter and logbook.
  • Ask the Pharmacist 
    This hour class provides detail about diabetesoral medications. The class answers questions about your medication regimen, proper use, possible side-effects, food-drug interactions, and what to expect when taking medications.
  • Understanding Insulin 
    This hour class gives A-Z instruction on how insulin works in the body, types and actions of insulins, delivery options and devices, site rotation and signs/symptoms to watch for. You will be shown a demo and can practice.
  • Diabetes and Pregnancy
    This two-hour class is a fun and interactive class to help the pregnant woman understand how to control her blood sugar during pregnancy. Dietary guidelines are provided, along with blood sugar goals, and glucose meters for those who require them.
  • Insulin Pump Information Session
    This session is for individuals who require some assistance with their pump or who are being put onto the pump for the very first time. You need to bring your supplies, blood glucose meter, and logbook/records with you every time.
  • Exercise and Diabetes Class
    This hour long class introduces exercise and the importance of managing diabetes and blood sugars while starting an exercise regimen.  This class is fun and interactive.  You can get involved with actual exercise today.
