The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has been dedicated to the health of all women for over 100 years. The department was founded with the dual goal of providing excellence in women's health care and in physician education. As the only Center of Excellence in Women's Health in Illinois, we continue this long tradition of excellence in patient care, education and research.
Our patients benefit significantly from our trifold dedication. Our patient care is informed by our research and by our commitment to educating the next generation of obstetricians and gynecologists, thereby enabling us to offer services unmatched by most private practices.
Academic medicine affords our patients unique access to treatments supported by the most up-to-date research, advanced surgical techniques, expert consultations and access to specialists across disciplines. We have many tools at our disposal to ensure every woman receives the care she needs and deserves.
Our Services
General Obstetrics and Gynecology
Our experienced, board certified physicians have the skills and expertise to treat women of all ages. We take care of women before, during and after pregnancy. At the same time, we focus on the concerns and problems facing women from childhood, adolescence and the reproductive years to menopause and beyond. Our goal is to educate women on yearly health maintenance and prevention of illnesses.
Center for Reproductive Health
We offer in-depth contraception counseling and services tailored to the needs and reproductive goals of each woman we serve. We provide comprehensive family planning services using evidence-based medicine in a compassionate and holistic manner to provide services and support for women seeking care for miscarriage, induced abortion and family planning services after sexual assault or abuse.
Maternal Fetal Medicine
Women experiencing complications during pregnancy can turn to our maternal fetal medicine specialists for help. Our specialists have advanced training in high-risk obstetric problems - those that put the mother or the unborn child at a serious health risk. Specialists in maternal-fetal medicine are available 24-hours a day to consult with other physicians and to care for patients.
Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility
The Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility staff at the University Of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System provides state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic services for couples unable to achieve a successful pregnancy. Our physicians utilize the most advanced reproductive techniques of ovulation induction, in-vitro fertilization, operative endoscopy, micro-surgical repair and hormone therapy. We tailor all diagnostic and treatment plans to the needs of each patient.
Certified Nurse Midwives
Our Nurse-Midwifery Practice is the largest Midwifery Practice in the midwest. We pride ourselves on supporting women seeking a natural birth and providing individualized care. For your peace of mind, we have a level 3 neonatal intensive care unit, with 24-hour in-house midwives, back-up attending physicians and anesthesiologists. UI Hospital has 8 labor rooms with two that include tubs designed for labor. We welcome all women to UI Hospital for prenatal care and well-woman OBGYN needs.
Perinatal Center
Our Perinatal Center brings together the talents of experts in many fields of medicine to provide comprehensive care for fetuses and mothers in high-risk pregnancies. We accept referrals and transports of mothers and/or babies requiring critical care including level III neonatal services and provide consultation and education to professional colleagues.
Gynecologic Oncology
With an emphasis on early detection and treatment for gynecologic cancer, our specialists are helping women lead longer, better lives. Working as partners with you, your other healthcare providers and your family, we offer the latest advances for women with cancer or precancerous conditions of the female reproductive organs (cervix, uterus, ovary, fallopian tube, vagina and vulva).

As part of a tertiary medical center, we are skilled at even the most complex cases. Yet, our physicians embody the compassionate care we value. Admitted patients receive the care of our experienced nursing staff. These nurses work closely with physicians to ensure that patients receive highly-specialized obstetrical care.
