Everyone on the team believes in putting patents first and emphasizing patient education. Their goal is increasing cancer awareness, promoting prevention and providing sound information and guidance on what to do when diagnosed with cancer.

Our Services

Surgical Oncology
The Department of Surgical Oncology provides screening, surgical treatment, and coordination of care for cancer patients with solid tumors. Our Oncologists provide comprehensive diagnostic and specialized surgical treatment choices for our patients diagnosed with solid tumor disorders. Clinical areas of expertise include, though are not limited to, tumors of the head and neck, breast, liver, gastrointestinal tract, melanoma, sarcoma and complex surgical procedures for cancer. This includes planned multidisciplinary treatment tailored to the individual patient. Expert surgical care is a standard including such specialized procedures as isolated limb and abdominal perfusions.

Gynecology Oncology
With an emphasis on early detection and treatment for gynecologic cancer, OBGYN specialists at the UI Hospital are helping women lead longer, better lives. We offer the latest advances in care for women with cancer or precancerous conditions of the female reproductive organs (cervix, uterus, ovary, fallopian tube, vagina and vulva).
Our OBGYN specialists have substantial expertise diagnosing and treating gynecologic cancers, including:

• Cervical cancer: begins with abnormal microscopic changes to cells in the cervix epithelium, the surface skin layer of the cervix.
• Fallopian-tube cancer: this very rare malignancy develops from cells inside the fallopian tubes (the two passageways between the ovaries and the uterus).
• Ovarian cancer: most common among women after age 65, ovarian cancer refers to any malignant tumor that begins in the ovaries.
• Uterine cancer: most prevalent cancer of the female reproductive tract and accounts for 13 percent of all cancers in women.
• Vaginal cancer: occurs when cancer cells develop in the tissues of the vagina, the passage connecting the cervix (the opening of the uterus or womb) with the vulva (the external genitalia).
• Vulvar cancer: malignancy of the vulva, the external genital area of a woman's reproductive system.

Radiation Oncology
The Department or Radiation Oncology is comprised of some of the leading experts in the management of cancers of the prostate, breast, gastrointestinal tract, brain and head & neck as well as lymphomas and sarcomas. Patient care is achieved through the collaborative efforts of highly trained professionals with extensive knowledge in the field of Radiation Therapy. We specialize in radiation therapy treatments, including megavoltage photons and electrons from linear accelerators, brachytherapy, and superficial X-rays. Special programs are stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) for brain lesions, total body irradiation (TBI), intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT), superficial therapy, endocavitary therapy and ophthalmic plaques

Hematology
The Department of Hematology/Oncology at The University Of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System is a leader in clinical drug trials and breakthrough research. Our teams of dedicated doctors are widely viewed as the best throughout their field and in their areas of expertise. Assisted by a skilled team of nurses, social workers and pharmacists, we work hard to ensure the needs of the patient and families are met from the onset of care. Our highly-advanced team treats sarcomas, performs bone marrow transplants and provides advanced treatment of brain tumors. Our clinical team is lead by an internationally-renowned research team housed at the University of Illinois at Chicago's College of Medicine. As an Academic Medical Center, we are leading the way in drug development, clinical experimental protocols and cancer prevention studies with the ultimate goal of improving prevention techniques and finding a cure. We focus on a variety of services including:

• Non-malignant (non-cancerous) Hematology
• Malignant (cancerous) Hematology
• Sickle Cell
• Stem Cell Transplant

Stem Cell/ Bone Marrow Transplantation
Stem cell/bone marrow transplantation is one of the most effective treatments for a variety of malignant and nonmalignant conditions including acute leukemia, chronic leukemia, multiple myeloma, Hodgkin's disease, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, aplastic anemia and sickle cell disease. Many patients, otherwise incurable with more conventional therapies, have the potential of being placed in "remission" following a stem cell transplant. Our stem cell transplant team approaches each case with the following goals in mind:

1. To significantly increase the survival and improve the quality of life of patients with hematological disorders.
2. To limit the complications that may occur during and after a stem cell transplant due to drug toxicities, infections, or graft versus host disease (GVDH) by a multidisciplinary clinical approach to the patients, safe and updated technologies for stem cell manipulation, and continuous training of the transplant staff.
3. To extend our approach to patients with other diseases, such as solid tumors, who are not eligible for a standard transplant because of their age or clinical conditions.
4. To develop and improve strategies for using alternative stem cell donor sources.

Sickle Cell
Our physician's sickle cell mission is to improve the quality of life for individuals with sickle cell disease and to reduce the morbidity and mortality of the disease through high quality medical care, patient community education and research into new therapies. Our services include:

Our Team

Our comprehensive team focuses on bringing together the best and most complete group of practitioners under one roof. Our team members, many of whom are nationally and internationally known for their dedicated work, include faculty from seven different colleges within the University of Illinois at Chicago. These physicians support and provide expertise in the following Patient Care Oncology Services: Surgical Oncology, Gynecology Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Hematology and Stem Cell Transplant. If admitted to the hospital with a cancer diagnosis, our oncology nurses will collaborate with the transplant team to provide compassionate care for the patient and patient's family.
